It was a spiritual night in downtown New Philadelphia Thursday night.Several hundred people gathered together at the Tuscarawas County Courthouse steps to praise God and pray together for all facets of the community, state and nation.The two-hour National Day of Prayer interdenominational service included participation by New Philadelphia Mayor Michael Taylor and County Commissioners Chris Abbuhl, Jim Seldenright and Kerry Metzger.Featured speaker was Henry Gruver of Woodbine, Iowa, also known as the international prayer walker.Gruver implored those assembled to rejoice with him for the safe return Thursday of his son-in-law, who just completed three tours of duty in the Middle East.Gruver, who has traveled the world, said he made a covenant with his son-in-law before he left for his first tour of duty that he would pray with and read Psalms 91 to his platoon before they engaged in any mission. And he noted that the platoon never lost a man – even though his son-in-law had three Humvees blown out from under him and his driver spent two days in a hospital with minor cuts and bruises.“You don’t think prayer works?” he asked the crowd. “I know it works.”Gruver, as he did last year, also spoke of the need for prayer for the country’s elected leaders every single day.“We need to cry out to God for our mayors … these commissioners of the county … and all of those who are in authority in this county will determine how peacefully you live in this county,” he said.Gruver was the guest of Joan Stiffler of Dover, a regional adviser for National Day of Prayer, who coordinated and conducted Thursday night’s event.Among those who offered prayers were Stiffler’s sons-in-law, Tom Moore of New Philadelphia and Jeff Reiser of Dover. Reiser offered prayer for families and Moore, for business.Others offering prayers were Pastor Jeff Matthews, who introduced the seven points of prayer concerts; Pastor Norman Shetler, government; Pastor Bill Steffen, military; Pastor Ted Knapp, church; Virginia Wright, education; and Pastor Dode Overton, media.Overton of New Life Church of God at Dover, who was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident a year ago, also gave the final Apostolic Prayer.Musical prayer was provided by the Shiloh Mountain Trio of the Dennison area. The group is comprised of Naomi Hicks, Susi Cox and Ben Massey Earlier in the day, about 125 Twin Cities area residents gathered at noon at the gazebo on Center St., Dennison, where a number of ministers led the group in prayer. Sherry Marty, coordinator of the program, gave the call to prayer reciting Judges 6:12 and also gave the benediction.The invocation was asked by Rev. Bob James of Good Shepherd United Methodist Church, followed by a vision for the cities by Mayors Greg DiDonato of Dennison and Rick Rieger of Uhrichsville.Prayers were led by Rev. Tom Klaserner of Christian Fellowship, national repentance; Rev. Jeff Graska of Bethel Worship Center, federal governments, military; Rev. Doug Downs of Rush Nazarene, local government, education; Rev. Florence McNutt of Uhrichsville Foursquare, education, schools; Rev. Mark Unrue of Uhrichsville First Presbyterian; Rev. Earl Miller of 11th Street Church of God, pastors, churches, all Uhrichsville; Rev. Rod Phillips of Dennison Foursquare, industry, economy; and Rev. Scott Caley of Park Christian at Dennison, families.
